Chaigeley Victorious in Inaugural Football Tournament

The Duel in the Sun
Chaigeley’s First Annual Football Tournament

The 25th of May earned the title of hottest day of the year so far. With our resident scorer, Sam Lee, tucked away in the shade with what seemed like hundreds of bottles of water. The pitch was freshly cut and marked out square, no thanks to Dave Sloan and his wonky lines, so the scene was set for an excellent footballing day.

With 3 visiting teams from as far afield as High Peak plus some local rivals from The Bridge and Prospects the competition was fierce but played in a really good spirit and supportive atmosphere. All the Chaigeley players gave everything they had in the group stages securing a place in the first place play off.

With Kurtis cutting an imposing figure in goals – he was rock solid and had the best goalkeeping top I’ve ever seen, Ben Shaw and Finnley creating an almost impenetrable defence and often surging forward to score and create chances, Remmie working tirelessly up and down the pitch – he must have covered every blade of grass, Matt setting an example as our excellent captain and playmaker, Bradley making a few energy filled appearances as super sub and finally Kyle who made a match winning – sorry – FINAL winning contribution!

After all had been fed and watered in the gym in the form of a buffet lunch provided by Danielle and Chris it was time to sort out the final positions for the day.

In a tense 3rd place play off that went down to a nail biting sudden death penalty shoot-out The Bridge finally emerged victorious after an excellent game against High Peak.

Then in the final Chaigeley found themselves up against Prospects who had beaten them twice already in the group stages – a massive obstacle to overcome if they were to lift the winner’s trophy.
Being cheered on by the whole school the boys rallied and held their own for the first few minutes. Then in a clash akin to David and Goliath – Kyle McDonald toppled a giant, picked his pocket and then managed to keep his head to slot home the winning goal.
An excellent day was had by all!
